PCB connectors for cryostat wiring
V.Zavjalov, January 2020

I decided to use PCB connectors with 2mm pitch for cryostat thermometer wiring in Fridge4. I use Datamate L-Tek M80 series by Harwin. They are avalable in 2-7,17,22 single-row and 4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,26,34,44 double-row versions. Typical ratings: 800V, 20A, 500 mating cycles (simple tin-plated pcb connectors usually rated for 50 cycles). Some available options in Farnell:

It's quite easy to solder 0.122 mm (40swg) constantan twisted pairs to the connector: cut pair to the correct length, remove isolation (I use a 5x10 mm piece of sandpaper, see photo), make small rings on wires using tweesers, put the pair to the connector, optionally tighten it with tweesers, and solder.

When wires are soldered directly to the connecter, without a PCB, it's good to cut connector pins to 1 - 1.5 mm length. After soldering and testing connector is filled with Araldite glue.

Making twisted pairs is described here
